LightPC outperforms compared to conventional volatile computing systems by\u00a0\u00a04.3x\u00a0while reducing power consumption by\u00a0\u00a073%, and providing\u00a0\u00a08 times larger\u00a0memory capacity.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>Nonvolatile memory is a type of computer memory that can retain stored information even after power is removed. It provides larger capacity and consumes lower power compared to DRAM which is volatile memory, but, nonvolatile memory provides lower write performance. Because of this shortcoming, existing nonvolatile memory, such as Intel\u2019s Optane memory, is used with DRAM. However a computer with the existing nonvolatile memory system has a problem that data in DRAM needs to be transferred to nonvolatile memory or SSD in order to retain\u00a0execution states.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>To solve this problem, the research team developed processor and memory controller that raise nonvolatile memory\u2019s performance and also developed OS for maintaining all execution states of the nonvolatile memory based computer. With our proposed techniques even if power is suddenly cut off, LightPC can restore the state before the power loss.\u00a0The research team implemented the proposed LightPC on their FPGA-based system board prototype and verified the effectiveness of LightPC.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>This work is expected to be utilized in a variety of ways, such as data centers and high-performance computing, as it can provide\u00a0\u00a0large-capacity\u00a0memory,\u00a0\u00a0high performance,\u00a0\u00a0low power\u00a0and\u00a0\u00a0service reliability.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>The KAIST Ph.D. Candidates (Miryeong Kwon, Sangwon Lee, and Gyuyoung Park) participate in this research, and the paper (LightPC:\u00a0Hardware and Software Co-Design for Energy-Efficient Full System Persistence) will be reported in June at \u2018International Symposium on Computer Architecture, (ISCA)\u00a02022\u2019.<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-131226\" src=\"http:\/\/ee.presscat.kr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/dataURItoBlob-1.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"553\" height=\"202\" title=\"\" srcset=\"http:\/\/ee.presscat.kr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/dataURItoBlob-1.png 553w, http:\/\/ee.presscat.kr\/wp-content\/uploads\/2022\/05\/dataURItoBlob-1-300x110.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 553px) 100vw, 553px\" \/><\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>The research was supported by the\u00a0MEMRAY,\u00a0Ministry of Science &amp; ICT (MSIT),\u00a0National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF), and Institute of Information &amp; Communications Technology Planning &amp; Evaluation (IITP).<\/div>\n<div>\u00a0<\/div>\n<div>More information on this paper can be found at CAMELab website (<a href=\"http:\/\/camelab.org%29\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">http:\/\/camelab.org)<\/a>\u00a0and YouTube (<a href=\"https:\/\/youtu.be\/mlF7W_RmYRk)\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">https:\/\/youtu.be\/mlF7W_RmYRk)<\/a>.
