Research Goals and Vision

The display science and engineering research at KAIST aims to develop cutting-edge display technologies that provide enhanced visual experiences. This research covers a wide range of fields, including front-plane technologies such as MicroLED, OLED, Quantum Dots, and Perovskite LEDs, back-plane technologies like thin-film transistors (TFTs), driver and readout ICs, and flexible/stretchable display technologies. The innovative outcomes in this field are being applied across various industries, including consumer electronics, medical devices, and wearable technologies.

Key Research Areas

Display Front-Plane Technology

  • MicroLED Technology : Develop high-efficiency MicroLED displays with superior brightness, color accuracy, and lifespan, while improving manufacturing and integration processes to overcome the current challenges in MicroLED technology.
  • OLED Displays : Advance OLED display technology to achieve excellent color reproduction, flexibility, and energy efficiency, developing high-efficiency, long-lifespan OLEDs with new materials and device structures.
  • Quantum Dot & Perovskite Emitters : Develop next-generation light-emitting devices using innovative materials like quantum dots and perovskites, which offer better color reproduction and cost-effective processes via printing technologies.

Thin-Film Transistors (TFTs)

  • Advanced TFT Technology : Research advanced thin-film transistors for high-resolution displays, enhancing their efficiency and reliability using new materials and fabrication processes like oxide semiconductors.
  • TFT Active-Matrix Circuits : Develop TFT circuits for active-matrix displays, including degradation compensation circuits and ultra-fine current-driving TFT circuits.

Display Driver and Readout IC

  • High-Performance Driver ICs : Design driver ICs to efficiently control high-resolution displays, ensuring accurate color and brightness control.
  • Readout IC for Sensors : Develop readout ICs that can accurately collect data from various display sensors, enhancing the overall functionality of display systems.

Flexible and Stretchable Displays

  • Flexible Displays : Develop technologies for foldable, rollable displays and devices that maintain high resolution and durability. This includes new substrate, encapsulation technologies, and flexible front-plane technologies enabling flexible TFTs.
  • Stretchable Displays : Research stretchable display technologies applicable to wearable and body-attachable electronics, using stretchable materials and structural methods to achieve flexibility.
